Choosing a Wedding Filmmaker in Switzerland: Why You Can Have the Best of Both Worlds

Why should you have to choose between a wedding filmmaker whose work you love and one who actually knows Switzerland?

It’s a dilemma many couples face when planning a destination wedding in Switzerland.

Do you bring a filmmaker from home? Someone whose work you admire, who understands your expectations and has experience filming international weddings? Or do you choose someone based in Switzerland, with the local knowledge, relationships and practical experience to make everything run smoothly?

What if you could have both?

An internationally experienced wedding filmmaker who also happens to call Switzerland home.

Someone who quite literally speaks your language, but also understands the cultural nuances, expectations and standards of an international wedding. Someone who knows the venues, the locations and the people, and can work seamlessly alongside the planner and creative team you’ve already chosen.

That’s exactly what I offer.

I’m a British wedding filmmaker with fifteen years of international wedding filmmaking experience and more than twenty years as a BBC Video Journalist and storyteller. My work has taken me around the world, and I’m regularly invited to speak and educate on the international stage, sharing my expertise in the art of storytelling and wedding cinematography.

And I just so happen to live in Wengen, a beautiful car-free ski and hiking resort in the heart of the Swiss Alps.

It’s been my home for the past decade. I’ve built relationships with local communities, venues, planners and suppliers, while continuing to film weddings around the world.

International credentials. Genuine local knowledge.

And it’s not just about knowing the best locations for beautiful footage. It’s about understanding the possibilities, navigating the practicalities and having relationships that can make things happen.

The best way to explain what that means in practice is through three very different weddings I’ve been involved in here in Switzerland.

Each couple had their own vision and their own reasons for choosing Switzerland. Some had their wedding team already in place, while others needed more help bringing everything together.

What they all had in common was a desire to create a wedding that felt personal to them.

Jennifer & Darin: Making the Impossible Possible

When Jennifer first approached me about marrying Darin at a beautiful viewpoint in Wengen, overlooking the Lauterbrunnen Valley towards Staubbach Falls, my answer was a straightforward no.

It wasn’t an established wedding venue. It was a public viewpoint, and I wasn’t going to promise something I didn’t believe was possible.

But Jennifer had a very particular reason for choosing this location. She and Darin had visited Wengen on holiday several years earlier and fallen in love with the village. They had even sat together on that very bench. When they became engaged, they knew exactly where they wanted to marry.

I gave it some more thought. With only 15 to 20 guests planned, this wasn’t going to be a large wedding taking over a public space. Perhaps there was a way to make it happen, provided we could make the appropriate arrangements.

And because I live in Wengen, I knew where to start.

Two men in traditional alpine attire play alphorns at a Swiss wedding ceremony overlooking a mountain valley, as the couple walks toward guests seated on wooden benches under a large tree.

Through my established local relationships, I was able to bring Jennifer’s vision to life.

What followed was a wedding that felt wonderfully, unmistakably Swiss. Alphorn players accompanied Jennifer’s walk to the ceremony, while the local Trychler traditions brought another unforgettable surprise to the celebrations.

I also introduced Jennifer and Darin to Hotel Falken, a historic hotel in Wengen, where they held their apéro and wedding dinner. It was exactly the warm, welcoming setting they had hoped for, particularly with Jennifer’s elderly grandmother among the guests.

The entire day was planned around Jennifer and Darin’s vision for their ceremony, from the local traditions to their celebrations at Hotel Falken. And because we were planning a wedding in the Swiss Alps, we also needed to prepare for the possibility of rain. Having established relationships locally meant I could work with everyone involved to build flexibility into the arrangements, including a Plan B, without losing sight of what mattered most to the couple.

  • Emma made our dream wedding come true

“I wasn’t sure if this was even possible but I was so lucky to find Emma who was local to the area and was willing to take on the challenge. With her connections and experience she knew exactly how to get it done and pulled off the most intimate, special and joyful day filled with so much love and unforgettable traditional Swiss surprises for the guests.

Her suggestions and connections was what made this day possible and our guests said multiple times this was the best wedding they have ever been to.

Top to bottom, everything was amazing and we cannot thank Emma enough for making our dream wedding come true!”
    Jennifer and Darin

For Jennifer and Darin, my involvement extended beyond filmmaking. I helped plan their wedding, brought together the local arrangements and created their wedding film, while my associate photographer LeighAnn photographed the day and I personally edited the finished gallery.

But whether I’m involved in planning a wedding or working alongside an established team, my approach to filmmaking remains the same. The experience comes first. My role is to preserve the story as it unfolds, without turning the wedding into a production.

Julie & Sreyan: From Proposal to Wedding, Built on Trust

My relationship with Julie and Sreyan began long before their wedding day. I first worked with them when Sreyan planned a surprise helicopter proposal on the Petersgrat Glacier, high in the Swiss Alps.

Eight months later, they returned to Switzerland to celebrate their wedding. With just four months to organise everything, I was their first call.

As a multicultural couple from the United States and India, they wanted a wedding that brought together their different traditions, families and friends, while making the most of everything Switzerland had to offer.

Having already worked together, we knew each other well. That existing relationship made it easier to understand what mattered to them and how they wanted their celebrations to feel.

I helped them find their wedding venue at the five-star Lenkerhof Gourmet Spa Resort in Lenk, introduced them to trusted local suppliers and worked with them to bring their plans together. A separate wedding coordinator was brought in to manage the arrangements on the day, allowing me to concentrate fully on filmmaking.

Their celebrations were anything but conventional. Guests travelled up the mountain by gondola for a traditional Swiss apéro before making their way back down on trotti bikes. Their wedding brought together different cultures, traditions and plenty of personality, all against the backdrop of the Swiss Alps.

For me, this wedding illustrates the value of building a relationship with a couple and understanding their plans well before the wedding day. It also demonstrates how local knowledge and international experience can work together, particularly when bringing different cultures, suppliers and expectations into one celebration.

And when the wedding finally arrived, I could do what I love most: work discreetly in the background, capturing the atmosphere, the conversations and all those unscripted moments that made their wedding unmistakably theirs.

  • Emma worked seamlessly in the background

“Without hesitation, she jumped into action: helping us find our dream venue, connecting us to an incredibly talented network of local vendors, and setting us up for wedding planning success.

On the wedding day, she worked seamlessly in the background, capturing the candid magic of our day.

She was a critical pillar in bringing our dream wedding to life.”

Michèle & Collin: An International Celebration. A Personal Story.

Michèle and Collin’s wedding at Fairmont Le Montreux Palace was a celebration on an entirely different scale. With guests travelling from the United States and Switzerland, and Michèle’s Swiss heritage bringing a personal connection to Montreux, their wedding brought together two cultures, two families and an international team of wedding professionals.

The celebrations began with a Belle Époque cruise on Lake Geneva, followed by a welcome event at Domaine de la Crausaz, where guests experienced Swiss traditions, including alphorn performances and yodelling.

For this pre-wedding celebration, I provided both photography and filmmaking. On the wedding day itself, I concentrated entirely on filmmaking.

Their wedding was planned and designed by Savina Uldry, with a team of specialist suppliers bringing together an extraordinary celebration at Fairmont Le Montreux Palace, a venue I already knew well.

Having spent fifteen years filming weddings around the world, I’ve built an international reputation for my approach to storytelling, while remaining firmly rooted in Switzerland. That combination of international experience and local knowledge is particularly valuable at a wedding of this scale. I already knew Fairmont Le Montreux Palace and was comfortable working alongside Savina Uldry and her team of creative professionals, each with their own responsibilities, without allowing the filmmaking to take over the celebrations.

The day included a first look at Château de Chillon, a speedboat journey across Lake Geneva and a lakeside ceremony, followed by a reception in one of the Fairmont’s grand ballrooms.

But what I remember most isn’t simply the scale of the wedding. It’s the personality that ran through it.

Music has always been important to Michèle and Collin, and at their reception they took to the decks themselves for a DJ set. It was one of those moments that said far more about them than any beautifully staged sequence could.

Their wedding was a major production in terms of planning, design and logistics. But that didn’t mean their wedding film needed to feel like one.

My role was to understand the people behind the celebration, work collaboratively with the team and capture the moments as they happened, rather than interrupting the experience to create footage.

The result was a film shaped by their personalities, their relationships, the different cultures coming together and the atmosphere of the weekend. Not simply a beautiful record of an elaborate wedding, but a story that was unmistakably theirs.

  • We are in awe of Emma

From Grand Celebrations to intimate Winter Weddings in the Swiss Alps

Of course, not every wedding in Switzerland takes place in a grand hotel or involves an extensive guest list. Some couples dream of something altogether different: an intimate mountain wedding, a winter elopement on skis or a private proposal surrounded by snow-covered peaks.

And that’s where genuine local knowledge becomes particularly valuable.

Living in the Swiss Alps means understanding far more than the scenery. It’s knowing how to access mountain locations, working with the right local people, understanding seasonal conditions and building flexibility into plans when the weather has other ideas.

For couples travelling from overseas, that experience can make the difference between an ambitious idea and something that can actually happen, without unnecessary complications or compromising the experience.

The Right Filmmaker. The Right Experience. Your Story.

Three very different weddings. Three couples with their own ideas, priorities and reasons for choosing Switzerland.

For Jennifer and Darin, it meant finding a way to marry somewhere that held a special meaning for them. For Julie and Sreyan, it was about bringing two cultures together and creating an experience their families and friends would never forget. And for Michèle and Collin, it meant celebrating on an extraordinary scale without losing the personality and spontaneity that made the wedding theirs.

What connects these stories isn’t a particular venue, style or type of wedding. It’s the importance of understanding the people behind the celebration.

That’s always been at the heart of my approach.

I believe the best wedding films begin with the experience itself. Every decision starts with your wedding, not the film. You should be able to experience it fully, knowing I’m there to preserve it without taking over.

And that’s where having both international experience and genuine local knowledge makes a difference. I understand the expectations of an international wedding, but I also know Switzerland, its venues, its communities and the people who can help bring your plans together.

Whether you’re working with an established wedding planner or still exploring what’s possible, my role is to collaborate with you and your team, understand what matters most and tell your story as it actually happened.
