It’s my third summer living in the beautiful alpine village of Wengen… as a family we moved here from the UK at the end of 2016. I had no idea then that ‘destination weddings’ would become something very different for me.
On this day in June three years ago I was full of excitement, with a little bit of trepidation in the mix. I was preparing to film my first ever destination wedding. Eve and Louis were to marry a Château St Julien in France and had commissioned me to tell their story.
So much more is involved in filming a wedding abroad, not least the days away from family while travelling to and from each destination. Living in Switzerland has brought the European weddings closer to me but every year I seem to travel further and further away filming in new places, meeting new people and telling their stories.
Looking back at my first European adventure to film a wedding it seems quite apt that the title of their wedding was ‘A Lifetime of Adventures’ – little did I know then the same lay out before me, with my passion of filming weddings and couples’ stories.
Since filming the gorgeous story of Eve and Louis I have filmed at so many other beautiful places all over the world and today I decided to look back, reflect and share some of them with you … plus let you know some of the places still on my bucket list.
So let me take you on a journey for a peek at some of the amazing stories I’ve captured.
Let’s start with Katie and Harold Two beautiful New Yorkers who brought their friends and family to France to Château du Puits es Pratx in October of 2018. They were so much fun and despite my preparation I was still quite taken aback by all the action on their fabulous day.
I’ve actually filmed over forty destination weddings now and that doesn’t include the weddings of those clients’ who travelled to the UK to what they would consider their ‘destination’. I guess you could say I’m a specialist destination wedding videographer nowadays.
Apart from covering some specialist weddings and events in Dubai and Bahrain, the furthest afield I have travelled, to date, is Melbourne. Sally and Geoff commissioned me to tell their story of how a guy from Australia won over a girl from the UK.
It’s great to see that their story continues with Sally receiving her Australian citizenship this week. Go Sally!
Much closer to home … well to my home in Switzerland anyway … was the gorgeous wedding of Shahad and Abdullah in Montreux. This couple fell in love with Switzerland on their European travels and decided to return to have their wedding at Fairmont Le Montreux on the banks of Lake Geneva.
Austria has also become one of my favourite neighbouring destinations and I do love a city wedding for variety and a bit of culture.
Together with two of my favourite photographers from Belle & Sass, whose very own wedding I will film this year, we captured the story of Ewa and Peter …
So many of my clients travel from afar to have their wedding in Europe and some have more reason than others to do so. Like the case of Brittany and Ryan who wanted to follow in the footsteps of her grandparents who met and married near Davos, in the Sertig Valley, in a tiny church on top of a hill.
It couldn’t be more picture perfect and their story more compelling and romantic.
The beginning of this year has seen me travel back to the UK, film a gorgeous wedding nearby at Giessbach Falls on Lake Brienz near Interlaken and at the start of the year I was in Zell Am See in Austria filming an out of the ordinary wedding and the story of Gerry-Rae and Nick.
Being a destination wedding videographer but also being based in such a beautiful location in the world also means I enjoy filming many elopements and also proposals of marriage.
One of my absolute faves would have to be right here on my doorstep when Chen Yi asked Esther to marry him with the amazing backdrop of the Eiger.
Ahead of me this year lies even more amazing adventures with weddings on the Greek island of Ios, Villa Antiche Mura in the Italian city of Sorrento, a very exclusive wedding at Kenwood House in London as well as a beautiful wedding at Schloss Oberhofen on Lake Thun, plus many, many more.
September also sees me rejoining the gorgeous Jane and Chuck who married last year in France and have this year commissioned me to film their afterparty at Calamigos Ranch in Malibu, Los Angeles.
